As a trail enthusiast, I've always been drawn to the natural beauty of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast. So, when I had the chance to join the Coast Mountain Bike Trail Association (CMBTA) for a trail day in West Sechelt this past Sunday, April 28th 2024, I was beyond pumped. What followed was an unforgettable experience that not only deepened my love for the outdoors but also strengthened my connection with a passionate community of nature lovers.
Exploring the Wonders of West Sechelt
West Sechelt is a paradise for those who crave adventure and serenity in equal measure. Its lush forests, crystal-clear lakes, and breathtaking coastal views create a stunning backdrop for any outdoor activity. As I made my way to the meeting point that morning, I couldn't help but feel the thrill of what lay ahead.
The Warm Welcome of CMBTA
Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly by the CMBTA team and other volunteers. The sense of camaraderie was immediate, and it felt great to be surrounded by people who shared my passion for the trails. The trail day leaders outlined our tasks for the day and emphasized the importance of safety, respect for the environment and respect for the shishalh swiya.
Trail Maintenance and Restoration
Our mission for the day was to revamp a less than ideal bridge on Addernach for an upcoming marathon on the Sunshie Coast, hosted by Janelle Hazlett, a local professional ultra marathon runner and huge supporter of the CMBTA. Working alongside the other volunteers, we cleared away debris, trimmed overgrown plants, and completely redid the bridge on Addernach. It was incredibly satisfying to see the immediate impact of our efforts, knowing that future hikers and bikers would benefit from our hard work.
Building Connections with Fellow Trail Lovers
One of the highlights of the day was getting to know the other volunteers. We shared stories of past adventures, tips for navigating the trails, and our favorite spots in West Sechelt. The sense of community and shared purpose made the day even more special.
Learning and Appreciation
The CMBTA team also took the time to educate us about the local ecosystem and the importance of responsible trail use. It was a valuable reminder of how our actions can positively impact the natural world around us. This knowledge added a deeper layer of appreciation for the trails and the work we were doing.
Reflecting on a Day Well Spent
As the morning concluded, we gathered to reflect on the day's accomplishments over a couple of brews and some pizza. It was rewarding to know that our collective efforts would help preserve the trails and enhance the experience for others. The day left me feeling invigorated and inspired to continue giving back to the trails I love.
